According to Cornell University entomologist David Pimentel, U.S. farmers use 700 million pounds of pesticides annually— 33 times more than at the beginning of the century. Insecticide use is up ten-fold.

These Chalcid wasp larvae have survived by eating the OMB larva.

These larvae failed to develop, even though their cells had plenty of nectar and pollen. They died of chalk brood, but not the type that threatens honey bees.

This larva was killed by spores of Chalkbrood fungi.

These Cuckoo Bees eat the OMB provisions, but not the bee larva itself.

These tubes are inhabited by wasps, who use grasses to partition their nesting cells.

Since wasps are carnivores, they paralyze insects like these for their larvae to feed upon. The juicy guts have been eaten, leaving this mass of dried wings and body parts.

The center chamber is teeming with - gross - Hairy-fingered pollen mites.

Too much trapped moisture can result in mold, mildew, and dead bees. Don't use plastic straws!

Tubes capped with white like these mean spiders inside, and these were emerging as I photographed them. See the legs? Ewww.

This sticky, white cocoon contains a dormant spider.

Within seconds it was out and running across my desk. Luckily a hatching native bee didn't encounter it first!

Well, it wasn't quite as dormant as I thought!
