It’s a Bird, it’s a Plane, it’s . . .
a Beetle! I saw this ‘eyed click beetle’ (Alaus oculatus, I believe) while walking in the woods yesterday. It first caught my eye because it was about 2-1/2″ long, but when it flew right at me (hence the blurry photo) I was struck by it’s markings: it looked just like a little Disney-esque bird! Pretty good deception to scare away would-be predators.
